A re-source™ for recycling
Can a bottle of water save the environment? No. But we'd like to imagine that every re-source™ water bottle can play a role in helping to improve recycling rates in America.
Collectively, plastic water bottles represent .03% of landfill waste. Not a lot, but if we all recycled a little more, there would be a little less waste. Better yet, when plastic water bottles are recycled, the plastic gets repurposed for other uses – from carpet to fleece, and sometimes even new beverage bottles. The re-source brand was created as a messenger of sorts – a positive force for less waste and more recycling. We're working with Whole Foods Market, McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC), and GreenOps, a subsidiary of Waste Management to encourage people to recycle all plastic beverage bottles, not just re-source! Find out how and where you can start recycling here...

What's next? For starters, we're testing out GreenOps Tracking Stations at some Whole Foods Market stores where plastic beverage bottles can be recycled. And for each plastic beverage bottle returned to these GreenOps Tracking Stations, we're donating 5 cents to Keep America Beautiful.*
Here's what you can do to help improve recycling.
* Up to an aggregate of $200,000, with a minimum donation of $50,000.

What's a GreenOps Tracking Station?
It's a freestanding unit that is just waiting for you to return and recycle your empty re-source™ natural spring water bottles or any other recyclable plastic beverage bottles. There are GreenOps Tracking Stations located at participating Whole Foods Markets.
We are working with GreenOps to make each GreenOps Tracking Station do more than just collect your plastic beverage bottles. Very soon you will actually be able to track and monitor the recapture rate at your Whole Foods Market and see the impact of your own recycling efforts. We are also figuring out a way for you to learn about the journey these bottles take when they leave Whole Foods and are later repurposed into something usable, like new plastic bottles, fleece or even carpet.
Did we mention the rewards? The more you recycle, the more points you’ll be able to redeem on Greenopolis.com. And for each plastic beverage bottle you recycle at a GreenOps Tracking Station from June 2009 to June 2010, we’ll donate 5 cents to Keep America Beautiful.*
* Up to an aggregate of $200,000, with a minimum donation of $50,000.
GreenOps is a product specific recycling program and a subsidiary of Waste Management.

Celebrate America Recycles Day... But Don't Forget the Other 364!

Recycling remains the easiest way for most of us to have a significant daily impact on the environment. Reduced energy use from recycling can have substantial impacts on greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, and protects our natural resources. Yet, sadly, our national recycling rates show that there's much more

Recycling. Make it a Movement!

These days, everyone's recycling, right? You would think so. It is, after all, the era of "green." Undoubtedly people are reporting that they're doing more recycling lately, and rising recovery rates attest to that. But these increases are slow. Access to convenient recycling isn't universal, and even in areas that do have robust recycling options, a lot of valuable materials are still winding ...

Together We Can Do a World of Good

For almost fifteen years now, MBDC has been helping companies design products and processes to be more ecologically intelligent.

One of the first things we do is ask our clients to imagine that the materials used through their business process are food or nutrients. What goes in must come out. And what comes out must be reusable. This simple analogy of re-conceiving the purpose of m...

Recycle This Bottled Water

Here is a great video we came across that shows recycling as part of our generation’s mission. Although plastic water bottles make up only 1/3 of 1% of all landfill waste, we think that is even too much. In the video, a well informed teenage eco-ambassador has one goal: to increase the number of recycling bins...

The Many Uses of Recycled Plastic

I’m always amazed to see what people can do with stuff that otherwise might just have been thrown away. A big part of why I’m so passionate about the re-source™ recycling mission is because I find the ingenuity that goes into reusing things inspiring.  But even more importantly, I think it reassures me that collectively “we” are continuing to push tow...
